Choose Joy

As we begin 2019 we may be filled with hope, anticipation, fear, dread or a combination of these and other feelings. Without a doubt, we can even have conflicting feelings at the same. As Daniel Tiger (a favorite cartoon when the grandkids are around) says/sings, "Sometimes you feel two feelings at the same time..." A challenge we face is "choosing joy" in the face of adversity. Joy, after all, is to be a hallmark of our faith and a noticeable fruit of the Spirit!

Clap your hands, all you nations;

shout to God with cries of joy.

For the Lord Most High is awesome,

the great King over all the earth. Ps. 47:11

Psalm 47 was known to the Hebrew nation as a New Year Psalm written during the good times of King Jehoshaphat but is appropriate whether our mood or the stock market is up or down! Check out these three quick observations about Choosing Joy:

1. Choosing Joy can be noisy: clapping, shouting to God, cries of joy.

2. Choosing Joy is inclusive: all people and all kinds of people are invited to join in.

3. Choosing Joy is based on how and who God is: He is awesome, He is King over all.

It was great to spend part of last week with many of our leaders on the Central Coast of California learning to Choose Joy through messages, fellowship, worship, laughter and reflection on who and how God is (a nice sunset accentuated the point)!

May 2019 be a year filled with our noisy, contagious, Christ-centered joy in spite of the challenges and disappointments we face!

Better Together,
